AVIF Viewer & Converter (AVIF to JPG, PNG, WebP)
Drop one or more AVIF files to preview them and convert them to JPG, PNG or WebP with an adjustable quality setting. Transparent AVIFs get a white background when saved as JPG, PNG keeps transparency, and every conversion runs in your browser using its built-in decoder, so photos never leave your device. Useful when an older app, email client or upload form refuses AVIF.

How it works
- 1
Drag your .avif files into the drop area or choose them from your device.
- 2
Pick JPG, PNG or WebP and set the quality for JPG and WebP.
- 3
Download each converted file, or use Download all for a batch.
What AVIF is and why it is hard to open
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses photos far better than JPEG and often beats WebP, so websites and phones are starting to use it. The downside is compatibility: many desktop apps, older Windows and macOS versions, email clients and CMS upload forms still reject .avif files.
Converting without losing quality
Each conversion decodes the AVIF into pixels and re-encodes them, so lossy targets like JPG add a small generation loss. Use quality 90 to 95 percent for a good balance, or PNG to keep the decoded pixels exactly. Keep the original AVIF as your master file.
Going the other way
Need to shrink a batch of JPG or PNG photos into AVIF or WebP instead, for a faster-loading site? Our image compressor handles that direction, so between the two tools you can convert into and out of the next-gen formats.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I open AVIF files on my computer?
AVIF is a newer format that older operating systems and image editors do not support. Modern browsers can decode it, which is why this tool works by using your browser as the decoder.
Does the tool work if my browser doesn't support AVIF?
AVIF decoding is supported in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. If a file cannot be decoded, the tool tells you instead of failing silently; try a more recent browser.
Which output format is best?
Choose JPG for photos that need maximum compatibility, PNG when you need lossless quality or transparency, and WebP for smaller files on the web. Converting to any of these makes the file larger than the AVIF original.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Decoding and conversion happen on your device, so private photos are never sent to a server.
