Dataset README Generator
Fill in your dataset's title, description, license, source, row count, file format, and a table of column definitions, and get a structured README.md following a Hugging Face-style Dataset Card layout. Add as many columns as you need, preview the generated Markdown live, then copy or download it, all without leaving your browser.

How it works
- 1
Fill in the dataset title, description, license, source, row count, and file format.
- 2
Add a row for each column with its name, type, and description.
- 3
Optionally add usage notes covering limitations or intended use.
- 4
Copy the generated Markdown or download it directly as README.md.
The README that usually gets skipped
A README explaining what's in a dataset, where it came from, and how it's licensed is useful, but writing one from scratch is tedious enough that it often doesn't happen. This generator turns that into filling out a short form. The resulting Markdown is consistently structured, includes a columns table, and is ready to commit alongside your data file.
A format readers and tools both recognize
The generated Dataset Card layout follows the structure used by popular dataset hubs, so anyone opening your README knows where to find the license, source, and column definitions. Since it's plain Markdown, it also renders cleanly on GitHub, GitLab, and any static site generator with no extra setup.
Frequently asked questions
What structure does the generated README follow?
It follows a 'Dataset Card' style layout popularized by platforms like Hugging Face: a title and description, a metadata table (license, source, row count, file format), a columns table, and an optional usage notes section.
Do I need to fill in every field?
No. Empty fields are simply left out of the output. If you leave the license blank, for example, the metadata table just won't include a License row. The title always appears, and falls back to 'Untitled Dataset' if left empty.
Can I add as many columns as I need?
Yes, click '+ Add column' to add another row to the columns table, and use the ✕ button to remove one. Rows with an empty column name are skipped in the generated output.
Is my dataset information sent anywhere?
No. The README is assembled with JavaScript running in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded or stored on a server.
Can I edit the generated README further after downloading it?
Yes, it's plain Markdown, so you can open README.md in any text editor and refine the wording, add sections, or link to the actual dataset file once it's downloaded.
