CSV to XML Converter
Paste or drop a CSV file to wrap each row into XML elements, with a configurable root and row tag name, or paste simple flat XML (repeated row-style elements) to extract it back into a CSV. All 5 predefined XML entities are escaped and unescaped correctly, and header names with spaces or symbols are automatically sanitized into valid XML tags. It runs on your device, and nothing is uploaded.

How it works
- 1
Paste your CSV text or a simple flat XML document, or drop a file into the input box.
- 2
Pick the delimiter and, for CSV → XML, the root and row element names.
- 3
The converted output updates instantly on the right.
- 4
Copy it or download it as a .xml or .csv file.
Why convert between CSV and XML?
Plenty of legacy systems, SOAP APIs, and enterprise data exchanges still speak XML, while CSV remains the universal format for spreadsheets and lightweight data exchange. This tool lets you move between the two without writing an XSLT transform or a custom script.
A hand-rolled, string-based converter
Rather than pulling in a full XML DOM library, both directions are implemented as pragmatic string processing: template-based generation for CSV → XML, and a lightweight tag tokenizer for XML → CSV. That keeps the tool small, fast, and predictable for the flat, repeated-row XML shape it's designed for.
Frequently asked questions
What XML structure does CSV → XML produce?
By default it wraps every row in <rows><row><ColumnName>value</ColumnName>...</row></rows>, using your CSV header as the tag names. You can rename both the root and row elements.
What XML structure does XML → CSV expect?
Simple, flat 'row-style' XML: a root element containing repeated sibling elements (the rows), each of which contains only text-leaf child elements (the columns). Deeply nested or mixed-content XML is out of scope for this tool.
Are special characters like & and < handled correctly?
Yes. All 5 predefined XML entities (& < > " ') are escaped when generating XML and correctly unescaped when reading it back, including numeric character references like A.
What happens if my CSV header has spaces or symbols?
Header names are automatically sanitized into valid XML tag names. For example, "First Name" becomes <First_Name>, since XML tags can't contain spaces.
Does this tool upload my file anywhere?
No. Everything is parsed and converted in your browser with plain JavaScript. There's no DOMParser, no server, and nothing leaves your device.
What if two rows in my XML have different child tags?
The CSV columns become the union of every child tag seen across all rows; a row missing a given tag simply gets an empty cell for that column.
